Chalon dans la Rue, street theater fesival at Chalon sur Saône

Every year, during the third weekend of July (Wednesday until Sunday), Chalon sur Saône hosts one of the biggest street theater festivals in France. During these days, the streets of Chalon sur Saône become the back drop for theater shows, circus acts or even music concerts.

The Festival Chalon dans la Rue will be held for the 26th time in 2011. Many theater companies and actors will make sure you will be surprised with varyingf acts: some very funny acts, but others more emotional... The shows are held a bit everywhere in the city until midnight every day. For the real "die-hards" the night continues at the "Abbatoir", a concert venue in Chalon sur Saône where music concerts will go on until early in the morning.

The Chalon dans la Rue festival is a great opportunity to see many different aspects of street theater art. Some are more intimite, other large productions, most are free, some you'll need to buy a ticket. You'll see the city of Chalon sur Saône in a different way during the festival; many shows are held at the Saint Vincent's square (next to the Cathedral), but some other more surprising venues (like the court yard of the former prison) will make you discover another part of the city. One thing is sure, the Chalon dans la Rue festival is one of the major events of the year in Burgundy, and is definately not to be missed if you're in the area !

On the more practical side, during the festival, it's not a good idea taking your car into town. You're bette of leaving your car at the campsite and maybe use the  "Coup de Pouce" free bus service of Chalon, taking you to many different places in the city. You could also choose to take one of the bikes which are parked in strategic places in the city, any one can rent them.

WATCH OUT: During the festival, over 350.000 people will probably visit Chalon sur Saône. This means that the city (and the campsite !) will be very, very crowded ! Do not forget to book your pitch online through this website, as the campsite will be fully booked during the festival.
